UT SAN ANTONIO ROUNDABOUT
Higher Education  /  San Antonio, Texas

DeShazo Group was retained in 2010 to develop the conceptual and schematic designs for a roundabout on the main entrance to the university.  DeShazo studied the traffic problems on SH-1604 at the entrance to UT San Antonio.  Traffic gridlock resulting from the intersection of the campus ring road and the main entrance on SH-1604 required the UT San Antonio Police Department to assign officers to direct traffic at the intersection during peak traffic periods.  The problem was due to the very short spacing between the ring road and the freeway.  DeShazo Group recommended several alternatives along with the preferred roundabout solution.  UT San Antonio elected to accept DeShazo’s recommendation and engaged the firm to prepare the design.  This effort included the realignment of several campus streets and parking areas.  DeShazo incorporated traffic controls that included speed limits, parking restrictions and pavement markings.  The roundabout has been in operation since 2012 and has successfully alleviated the traffic gridlock.
