Traffic Assessment Studies
Right-sized traffic studies when a full TIA isn’t required.
DeShazo Group is engaged by numerous clients who need a traffic study but, due to the limited size of their proposed development, not a full Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA). This focused review—typically called a Traffic Assessment Study (TAS)—evaluates turning movements at key access points, intersection capacity, and specific operating scenarios so owners and reviewers can make clear, early decisions.
Based in Dallas since 1980, DeShazo has delivered thousands of transportation assignments across North Texas and the region. Our TAS format is concise, defensible, and familiar to municipal and agency reviewers—making it easy to approve or escalate to a full TIA only if warranted.
What we do
- Define scope with reviewers: align effort to project size so TAS remains proportional to risk.
- Trip generation & distribution: ITE TripGen with local context; analog sites when appropriate.
- Turning-movement checks: observe and/or count operations at particular access points and frontage intersections.
- Intersection capacity screening: snapshot LOS, v/c, and queues for the study intersection(s).
- Access & circulation review: driveway spacing, sight distance, internal circulation, service/loading, ADA paths.
- Scenario testing: evaluate specific conditions (e.g., alternative access, turn lanes, timing tweaks, drive-thru stacking).
- Mitigation recommendations: targeted signing/marking, restriping/turn lanes, timing refinements when needed.
- Documentation: clear 1–3 page TAS memo with exhibits—easy to review and escalate to a TIA if required.
Why it matters
- Right-sized: tailored for limited-size developments; no unnecessary scope.
- Faster approvals: concise, reviewer-ready exhibits reduce cycles.
- Decision-oriented: isolates access, capacity, and queue risks early.
- Scalable: defensible on its own and easy to expand into a full TIA if needed.
