HPISD HIGHLAND PARK SCHOOL
K-4 / Dallas, Texas The school is located at 7202 W Northwest Highway within the city limits of Dallas, Texas. The total student population is 652 students. As part of the approval process, the submittal of a TMP to the City of Dallas is required as a record of the preferred strategies to be used by the school to ensure overall traffic safety and efficiency. School #5 is being used to house students while other elementary schools are being rebuilt. At the time of observations, University Elementary was currently under construction and those students were attending School #5. University Elementary school boundary is south of School #5, south of Southwestern Blvd. Therefore, while HPISD schools are typically neighborhood oriented with a high number of students walking, the number of students walking is lower in this study than will be after the schools is serving its permanent students. The following two school years School #5 will accommodate students currently attending Hyer Elementary. School year 2018-2019, Bradfield Elementary school will be rebuilt and Bradfield students will attend at Hyer Elementary and Hyer Elementary Students will attend School #5. School year 2019-2020 Hyer Elementary students will remain at School #5 while their school is rebuilt. School year 2020-2021 School boundaries will be revised. Since School #5 is within the existing Hyer Elementary school boundary, some of the students will remain at School #5 while others return to the newly rebuilt Hyer Elementary. When new School #5 boundaries are established, there will be an increased number of students walking/riding bikes when the school is serving its permanent boundary of students. Based on field observations conducted by DeShazo during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods, Highland Park School #5 staff strictly enforces a safe and efficient traffic management plan. The peak queue occurred during the afternoon dismissal period. The site provides ample queuing space for parent vehicles. School staff should continue to manage traffic in accordance with the TMP. |
